Review of Homeboyz
I felt that Homeboyz, written by Alan Lawrence
Sitomer, was an interesting book. It is about a boy named Teddy and the revenge
he seeks. After his sister is shot in a
drive-by, which was written off as a R.P.R.T. (Wrong Place Wrong Time), the
protagonist of the story tries to “get back” at the gang who did it. In a matter of weeks, Teddy ends up in
jail, a court, and under house arrest.
He is then assigned to be the “big brother” of Micah, a want-to-be
gangster. The book narrates the troubles
both boys go through as they try to escape the danger of the streets. What I enjoyed most about this book was the
storyline. While reading, I was eager
to turn the page to find out what surprise was coming next. The reality of the entire situation was
captivating. As Teddy traveled through the justice system, I felt that I was
actually in court with him. The twists
in events always kept me on my toes.
Teddy is a character that I can relate to because he is avidly
interested in technology. He is always
observing the small things in life and can make accurate conclusions very
quickly. I try to do this too, but I am
not nearly as precise as Teddy. Although
I believe that the writing could have been
better, the plot makes up for it.
